Professional Support - David Lee
With
over thirty five years experience in professional showbusiness, it
is surprising to learn that Bradford-born David does not come from
a theatrical family. His father was a builder and his mother worked
in a woollen mill.
It was on a rainy day whilst on holiday in Blackpool that his mother
took him to see a show on the South Pier. When the compere of the
show asked for children who could sing, dance or tell jokes, to join
him on stage, the five year old David was standing in front of his
mother's eyes before she had felt him leave her side! Since he had
never been on stage before, she doubtless wondered what he was going
to do. His turn finally came, and when asked what he would perform
he replied "A Bow Legged Friend". Don't you mean "A
Four Legged Friend" sonny asked the compere. David was very deaf
in his early childhood and therefore listening to the song on the
radio, had misinterpreted the lyrics! He sand the piece to the great
amusement of the audience, who responded with thunderous applause
at the conclusion of the number. Looking out over the multicoloured
footlights and listening to that wonderful sound of applause, David
knew there could be no other vocation for him in life other than the
stage.
Regular visits to the Bradford Alhambra pantomimes further fuelled
David's enthusiasm and, on the advice of his headmaster, his mother
started taking him to the Gainsborough Stage School in Bradford. It
was here that he first discovered the songs of the man dubbed "The
World's Greatest Entertainer" , and started to performing them
in stage school productions and for family gatherings. These early
days were followed by many appearances in summer season, pantomime
and national tours.
David was also honoured to be asked to take over for Al Jolson Jnr
when the entertainer had to return to the United States.
In 1977 David decided to move into the production field, predominantly
as a pantomime producer presenting his first pantomime (Goldilocks
& The 3 Bears starring Johnny Hackett) here at the Civic Theatre.
The following year he presented Valentine Dyall and Brian Marshall
in Aladdin and Charlie Drake and Tammy Jones in Jack & The Beanstalk
at what was then the Gaumont in Doncaster. Then as now he returned
to his childhood for inspiration, never forgetting the magic of the
shows he had seen at the Bradford Alhambra, produced by the legendary
"King of Pantomime" Francis Laidler.
Over the years David has employed many of the top names in showbusiness,
including Spike Milligan, Wayne Sleep, Kathy Staff, Billy Pearce,
